Baptism
What is Baptism?
Baptism is one of the two ordinances that Christ left the church. An ordinance is something that Jesus did and commanded his followers to do that shows the gospel (Matthew 28:19-20;Matthew 3:13-17). The other ordinance is communion. Baptism is a symbol of Chist’s death, burial in a tomb, and resurrection (Colossians 2:12). It is also the next step for people who have become Chritians.
Who is baptized?
Christians are baptized. We see in the book of Acts when someone became a believer they would be baptized (Acts 2:37-41; Acts 8:30-39). Here at Millville Assembly we practice what is called “Believers Baptism” which means that we only baptize believers. We see in scripture that baptism only occurs after hearing the gospel then repenting and confessing Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Therefore, non-believers are not baptized.
What baptism is not
Baptism is not salvation. We are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). Even though it is not necessary for salvation, it is a command and example set by Christ so we should obey. It is an outward expression of an inward confession.
Why should I be baptized?
First, Christ our example was baptized by John. Even though He did not need to be “cleansed” rather He was baptized as an example for us to follow (Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:11; Luke 3:21-22; John 1:31-34). Second Christ commanded it. Before Christ left this earth he told His believers to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). Third, Baptism identifies us with the Church. Baptism in Jesus’ time showed that a person was identifying themselves with a group. Baptism identifies us with the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12-13; Ephesians 4:4-6; )
How am I baptized?
We baptize by immersion. That means that the believer is fully put into the water. We do this because the greek word “Baptizo” means to submerge. We also do this because it mirrors the burial and resurrection of Christ. By placing a person down into the water back first it is similar to burial and bringing them up is how they are risen.
We baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. We do this because it is how Jesus instructed us to baptize in Matthew 28:19.
